How to Get Koi in Grow a Garden

The Koi is a limited-time Mythical Pet in Grow a Garden, introduced during the Zen Update on July 19, 2025. Unlike most pets, the Koi cannot be obtained from eggs—it is exclusive to the Zen Shop and requires completing certain steps before you can purchase it.

How to Unlock the Koi

To unlock the Koi, you first need to interact with the Zen Channeller’s tree, a special feature in the Zen Event. The tree must be grown to Stage 4 before the Koi becomes available in the shop. Once this requirement is met, the pet can be purchased in two ways:

  1. Chi Purchase – Costs 45 Chi, but the Zen Shop restocks only once every hour, and the Koi might not always appear.
  2. Robux Purchase – Costs 449 Robux and can be bought instantly without waiting for restocks.

Because it is tied to the Zen Event, the Koi is considered unobtainable once the event ends, unless re-released in future updates.

The Koi is designed to resemble a real-life koi fish. Its base design includes a white body covered with black and orange patches, closely mimicking the patterns seen in traditional koi varieties.

  • The Koi is one of the few pets with multiple color variants, which can sometimes mix together in unexpected ways.
  • This makes it one of the most visually diverse pets in the game, alongside the Mochi Mouse.

Ability – Fish of Fortune

The Koi has a unique passive ability called Fish of Fortune.

  • When hatching eggs, there is a (0.22 × Weight + 3)% chance that the egg will be refunded.
  • This chance scales with the weight of the Koi, making heavier variants slightly stronger.
  • Restrictions: The effect does not apply to Premium or Exotic Eggs.
  • Behavior: Refunded eggs do not go back into the inventory but instead reappear in the hatching spot.

This ability makes the Koi especially useful for farming rare pets that have low hatch rates, such as the Kitsune (0.08% chance). By potentially recovering eggs, the Koi can save valuable resources and improve efficiency.

Trivia

  • The Koi and Mochi Mouse are currently the only pets that can have different color variations.
  • Like the Seal, the Koi’s ability is capped at 8% chance, but due to being a shop-exclusive pet, it cannot naturally reach this cap through size or weight. Instead, players can only achieve maximum efficiency through glitches or stacking boosters.
  • With a full team of rainbow maxed-out Koi (over 1kg each), combined with toys and the Grandmaster Sprinkler, the Lucky Hatch chance can theoretically reach 64% (8 × 8).
  • Before Update 1.16.0, the Koi’s recovery rate was much lower (~0.7%). On July 26, 2025, it was buffed to ~3.2%, making it far more viable.
  • Earlier descriptions in the shop incorrectly claimed the Koi increased egg hatch luck rather than refunding eggs.
  • At one point, its shop value displayed as Sheckle 0 when checked with Raphael.

Why Get the Koi?

The Koi is one of the best pets for players focused on egg farming. While it doesn’t guarantee more rare pets directly, the egg recovery mechanic indirectly increases your chances by allowing you to retry hatches without losing as many eggs.

This makes it particularly valuable for:

  • Collectors who want rare pets with ultra-low hatch rates.
  • Efficiency players who want to maximize resources during events.
  • Team strategies, since multiple Koi pets can stack their abilities for higher overall recovery chances.

Whether you’re aiming to unlock rare pets, experiment with team strategies, or simply enjoy collecting unique companions, the Koi stands out as one of the most rewarding additions to Grow a Garden. Since it is tied to the Zen Event, it may not always be obtainable, so players should take the opportunity while it lasts. Alongside the Koi, there are plenty of ways to expand your gameplay experience—explore the Zen Shop, hatch rare eggs, and even buy Grow A Garden items to enhance your progress and make the most of each update.
